Feng Yi started its business as a trader for coils and wires. In 2006, general manager Kern Hsiung Huang, noticing the potential of titanium fasteners, began to pay his attention to the R&D of titanium fasteners. Nowadays, its monthly output of titanium fasteners has reached 5,000 tons, making it one of the few Taiwanese manufacturers that are able to develop and manufacture titanium fasteners.

Mr. Huang said, the manufacturing cost of titanium fasteners is high and will need the introduction of high-end technology, and therefore, few companies have stepped into this market sector thus far. However, as titanium screws are usually considered to be “corrosion resistant, with high strength, and lightweight,” they have been widely applied to military, automotive, medical, chemicals, energy, and marine industries. Due to the scarcity and a highly competitive edge of titanium fasteners in the market, Feng Yi is gradually increasing its export of titanium fasteners year on year and is also looking or European/U.S. partners or distributors. It wishes that the world can actually notice the R&D capability of Taiwanese fastener industry.

Mr. Hung added, he is familiar with the manufacturing process and has successfully developed the first “titanium alloy self-drilling screw” patented in the EU, Germany, Japan, Australia, Taiwan, China, and other regions. He said, forging is a key to manufacturing titanium fasteners. The most significant features, compared to traditional machined titanium fasteners, are material saving, reduction of manufacturing costs, increase in strength of fasteners, and mass-production-like productivity, making the production of titanium fasteners be more economically effective.

The current customers of Feng Yi are from the EU, USA, Japan, and Southeast Asia. The successful entry into Japan proves the recognition of the local market toward Taiwan’s cold heading and forging technology for titanium fasteners, which Mr. Huang feels quite honored. He said, the competition in Japan is very fierce and it is not easy to get orders from Japan. As in Europe their products are mostly used in chemical engineering and the demand this year shows a significant increase. In Taiwan the automotive and bicycle industries try to use titanium fasteners. All these results are favorable to the revenue growth of the company this year.
