EU Tightens Steel Import Safeguards, Impacting Swiss Exporters

The European Union will introduce stricter steel import safeguard measures from July 1, following approval by the Council of Member States. The new rules reduce duty-free steel import quotas by approximately 47% and increase tariffs on imports exceeding those quotas from 25% to 50%. Under the revised system, up to 18.3 million metric tons of steel can still enter the EU duty-free each year. Imports above the quota, however, will face the higher tariff rate.
The measures are also expected to affect Swiss steel exporters, as Switzerland is not exempt from the revised safeguards. According to the European Commission, Switzerland and the EU are currently negotiating duty-free quota arrangements for Swiss steel products. The new rules are intended to strengthen protection for the EU steel industry while reshaping trade conditions for overseas suppliers, including Swiss manufacturers.
