Nigeria is Considering Limiting Auto Parts Import
According to the general manager Jelani Aliyu of The National Automotive Design and Development Council of Nigeria (NADDC), “if one takes the current economic development and population of Nigeria into account, he may agree to ban the import of auto parts.” NADDC is pushing the local auto parts manufacturing program in order to reduce the import volume of auto parts. Such an initiative of the Nigerian Government is for avoiding the continuous reliance upon imported auto parts or relevant products. With a population of nearly 0.2 billion, Nigeria must have its own development of automotive industries and the ability to manufacture products and offer relevant service. NADDC has been in negotiations with several overseas companies to discuss the possibility of manufacturing auto parts in Nigeria. NADDC has also established the local auto parts fund, which is to encourage manufacturing in Nigeria through funding specific projects, including appropriation for potential auto parts manufacturing programs and supporting the R&D of advanced automotive technology. NADDC found in its survey that Nigeria is able to provide sufficient supply of raw materials, infrastructure and labor force and this could be great helps for realizing manufacturing auto parts in Nigeria.
