A threaded fastened joint is created when a bolt or screw is tightened against or on a jointed member(s), Figure 1. As the magnitude of torque increases on the bolt/screw, the bolt/screw elongates and the jointed member(s) undergo compression. The force that generates this elongation and compression in the threaded joint is called clamp-load or pre-load. This article will address the different means of measuring clamp-load and the technology behind it.
