CNC Craft Master: Mr. Chen-Mu Chen of IOU GOOD JYI INDUSTRY

Improving Precision Parts R&D by Integrated CAD/CAM

by Tanya Shih, Fastener World Inc.

General manager Chen-Mu Chen, establishing Iou Good Jyi Industry, has 30 plus years of background of precision CNC machining. Back in 1984 at the establishment, the company started its business as a precision parts developer taking OEM orders from clients. It deals with the demand from complex, high precision, small lot and highly diversified fields such as electronics, optics, medical treatment, aerospace, motors, and bikes, offering processing for parts in stainless steel, titanium, aluminum, iron, and copper.

Iou Good Jyi Industry spans the area of 3305.8 square meters. It is located in Erlin Town in Changhua County, Taiwan. Its automatic production equipment includes CNC Swiss-Type and Gang-Type combination lathes, and the most efficient 5-axles combination lathe (totaling 30 sets). Quality control equipment includes CNC 3D measuring machine, 2.5D image measuring machine, metallographic cutting machine, Mitutoyo surface roughness tester, and Sylvac height gage. The company sets the most stringent requirement for manufacturing technology and quality control. Sales span across Europe, Americas, and Asia, including industrial giants like Germany, USA, and Japan.

A few years ago, the company introduced auxiliary CAM software, boosting the efficiency of product development to rise by 80%. After integrating with CAD software, it discards the traditional manual program input, and sets up a series of automatic production systems that incorporate intuitive & human-based operation, 3D VR drawing, and singular database. The company not only achieves its R&D ability but also meets clients’ demand for high quality and high precision, making a win-win result in the industrial competition.

The company has been certified by ISO 9001:2008 and is compliant with CNC processing standards. Its 25 professional staffs follow regulations, its dust-and-grease-free facility is well organized, and metal waste is well recycled. The company offers personnel training through cooperation with the academia, and has initiated automatic production since 1989. However, general manager Chen tells about the difficulty in passing on traditional techniques, “Tradition does not equate falling behind or lack of delicacy, whereas it possess the preciseness comparable to modern lathes, though it often takes 3 to 5 years for an apprentice to be excellent in work. Training your people is one thing, but to be able to retain them is another one.”

In the perspective of the hardware and components industry, Chen points out 4 advantages of Taiwanese industry: 1. Act in agility and communicate with flexibility; 2. A cluster of satellite factories from upstream to downstream; 3. Sufficient technical abilities; 4. Integrated sales and production, compared to Taiwanese manufacturers who only knew nothing about marketing strategies but production 40 years ago. Chen encourages the industry to understand the trend and go for marketing to tap into the market.
