CNC Machining Master: Chien-Tien Chen of Gain Den Precision Co., Ltd.

Machine Tools + Programming + Cutting Tool R&D = Technical Paradigm

by Tanya Shih, Fastener World Inc.

Gain Den is a leading CNC machining company dedicated to precision industrial engineering. With 40 years of experience in the industry and transformation, the company has reached the highest state of “Art & Craft in Precision”. GM Chien-Tien Chen says, “Gain Den is a technique-based company, and its critical and indispensable elements of having a position in the CNC market are the applicative machines, skillful engineers and the cutting tool R&D.”

Gain Den has dedicated to precision industrial engineering after it was established in 1974. Initially it started business under the name of “Kingdom Precision Casting” specialized in making electronic connectors, and then expanded and upgraded facilities in 1990 to broaden the product range to cover automobiles, motorcycles, bikes, and pneumatic/hydraulic components. In 2000, the 2nd generation took over the company. With adequate momentum it started tapping into the field of optical fiber components, developing and supplying precision components (tolerance within +/- 0.003mm) in aluminum, copper, alloy steel, stainless steel, Inconel alloys, titanium and hard cutting materials.

Chen took over the company at that time when Taiwanese industry started to seek more opportunities by relocating factories overseas. It did not take so long for Chen to think about staying or leaving, who believes in the principle of “precision” and “techniques”. Since he decided to stay, Chen’s first step to transform the company is to think about how to build up the reputation of “Made-In-Taiwan”.

Acquiring ISO9001 & TS16949 Certificates for Improving Production & Management Process

Gain Den has passed ISO9001 & TS16949 certification. Chen says that the acquisition of certificates is not a requirement from the market but its intention to prevent from losing operational flexibility and to be able to offer customers more dynamical service. Setting up manufacturing process via ISO and TS systems can effectively improve the defect rate of products and reduce clients’ complaints. Therefore, every certificate is not an exhibit of Gain Den, but also a management principles.

Attaining Core Techniques & Talents to Maximize Efficacy of Machine Tools

“A sales rep gets a purchase order is like a warrior wins a war.” If the company wants to run sustainability, the decision-maker should know how to provide with support and resources. Gain Den has 50 machines  including Star and Citizen sliding head complex machines, a number of Miyano fixed head complex machines and robot arm machines to improve stability and capacity.  In order to move into high volume production it has a Schutte 6-axis multi-spindle automatic machine and 16 station rotary transfer system.   The company pursues “operation simplified” in which talents do what they are good at in critical procedures. Currently there are 3 teams of independent operators, each including 6 operators led by a team leader who manages tasks and controls procedures.

With a low turnover of staff in the company, retention of talents helps accumulate its technical momentum. Gain Den keeps close eyes on the development of machines and cutting tools. No complaint from customers proves Gain Den’s quality and helps it gain a firm stance with its “MIT” brand.
